The Youth Exchange Against Anti-Rights is an international one-year exchange program bringing together young researchers from South Africa, Norway, and Myanmar to investigate the rise of anti-Rights movements and their impact on historically marginalized groups. Through youth-led research and advocacy, participants will explore key themes such as anti-gender activism, authoritarianism, lawfare, and anti-environmentalism, producing knowledge that contributes to global social justice efforts.

A Global Collaboration

The project is a partnership between:

  • The Norwegian Students’ and Academics’ International Assistance Fund (SAIH) (Norway)
  • The Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender (CSA&G), University of Pretoria (South Africa)
  • Colors Rainbow, a leading LGBT+ rights organization in Myanmar

Funded by Norec, the program spans two rounds (2025–2026), fostering interdisciplinary research, advocacy, and networking opportunities for participants.

Why This Matters

We are witnessing a global surge in authoritarianism, where civic space, academic freedom, and gender rights are under threat. Anti-rights movements use lawfare and political rhetoric to restrict civil liberties, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. This project aims to bridge critical knowledge gaps and empower young researchers to counter these forces through evidence-based advocacy.

Additionally, the program addresses the underrepresentation of Global South researchers in international discourse by fostering interregional collaboration and ensuring diverse perspectives are recognized in the fight for democracy, human rights, and environmental justice.

Program Structure

Participants will travel across the three partner countries, engaging in research, training, and advocacy activities:

  • South Africa (Jan–Apr 2025): Research methods training, data collection, and academic events at the University of Pretoria
  • Norway (May–Jul 2025): Studying lawfare, attending workshops, and engaging in academic discussions on authoritarianism at SAIH and the University of Bergen
  • Thailand (Aug–Nov 2025): Media and advocacy training, research completion, and knowledge-sharing at Colors Rainbow
  • December 2025: Post-exchange advocacy work, professional development, and collaboration with home organizations

Building Skills & Networks

Beyond research, the program equips participants with:
✔ Advanced research skills through interdisciplinary and participatory approaches
✔ Advocacy training to counter anti-rights narratives
✔ International networking opportunities with scholars, activists, and policymakers
✔ Practical experience in policy engagement and knowledge production

This exchange is more than an academic endeavour—it is a platform for action, empowering young researchers to drive meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
